There are no sugar cookies like the sugar cookies of your childhood.
We have all had sugar cookies, probably in celebration of Christmas, New Year, or other important holidays. We may even eat sugar cookies with brown sugar and butter for breakfast. But do you recall “sugar cookie” as a dessert option? I don’t think so!
Inspired by the ever-popular sugar cookie, National Sugar Cookie Day is observed on July 9th each year. If you have kids (or if you’re just young at heart), sugar them some sugar cookies! So this year, sugar cookie yourself a sugar date.
But what is a sugar cookie exactly? It’s probably the most common type of “cookie” in America, though it’s not actually a cookie at all. A sugar cookie recipe usually includes sugar, flour, butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and baking powder or baking soda. For the best taste and texture, these ingredients should be fresh—vanilla extract, especially since it can expire quickly when not refrigerated.
Pastry-making and decorating have become a fine art, with sugar cookies the latest craze for kids and adults alike. Starting with the shape of the cookie, the dough is shaped by either a cookie cutter or other methods of cutting and shaping. Once baked, the more detailed dough is embellished to look like snowflakes, flowers, stars, hearts, and much more.
For National Sugar Cookie Day, why not get the kids in on the sugar cookie action? Teach them to make sugar cookies and decorate sugar cookies of their own design. There is sure to be plenty of sugar for everyone! Enjoy sugar cookies as a dessert or top some with your favorite ice cream or fudge sauce for a sugar cookie sundae all your own.
This weekend will be super fun because we’ll have awesome local artists and some great food. We hope to see you there!
