Labor Day at the market

The long weekend's best morning is under the Water Tower — peak-season produce, two music sets, and free yoga at 9:30. Sunday, September 6, 9 am to 1 pm.

It's hard to believe it's already September. Linda said it first in her note this week, and she's right — one minute you're buying the first zucchini of the year, and the next it's Labor Day weekend and the tomatoes are the size of softballs.

The Fair wraps up on Monday. The long weekend is here. And Sunday morning, as always, is wide open: September 6, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, 7800 Golden Valley Road, under the Water Tower.

This might be our favorite Sunday of the season. Nobody's rushing off to anything. There's an extra day on the other side of it. And the market is at that particular September moment where high summer and early fall are on the tables at the same time.

Straight From Nearby Fields

Beck's, Svihel's, Lor Produce, Yang's Fresh Flowers and Vegetables, Bao Yang, 2JCK Produce, and The Farm of Minnesota fill the produce rows with tomatoes, peppers, sweet corn, melons, beans, and crisp greens — plus the first hints of what's coming next as the season turns.

Come early if you're picky about your corn. Come late if you'd rather take your time. Either way, bring a bigger bag than you think you need.

Bakers, Roasters & Specialty Makers

Café Verte, Great Harvest Bread Company, and The Nelson Loaf handle the bread and pastry end of the morning, and BAKE! Gluten Free Goodies is here for everyone who shops the gluten-free shelf.

For the pantry, there's plenty new to look at: Ms. Julia's Seasonings and Welwe Dumplings join us this week, alongside Yummytizers for snacks, Chocolate San Jose for single-origin chocolate, and TNT Coffee Lab pouring a proper cup.

The Pantry Shelf

Local staples that keep: pickles and preserves from Schyma's, honey from Bee Sweet Honey, a wedge or two from the Wisconsin Cheese Outlet, and pasture-raised meat from the Veteran's Farming Initiative.

Handmade & Homegrown

Wonder Paper Art, Hand Heart Beads, Elena's Cute Creations, Dark Crystal Creations, and Your Craft and Collectible bring the handmade row. Bee Relaxed and Lovely Skin by Miriam have the soaps and skincare covered, and Wild Iron Cooking has the kitchen end of things, refurbished cast iron included.

Hungry Now? Ready to Eat

Come with an appetite. Crepe & Cake, JM Bistro, Atacama Catering, Natasha's Pierogis, Lziza Mediterranean, and Midlife Coffee will keep you fed from open to close.

At the Music Tent

Two sets, back to back, all morning. Matt Yetter opens from 9:00 to 11:00, and Nuance — the duo of Dan Wascoe and Baibi Vegners — plays us out from 11:00 to 1:00. Bring a chair if you're the sitting type; it's a good morning to stay a while.

Meet Our Community Partners

Say hello to the neighbors who make this a community and not just a marketplace: PRISM, the University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners, the City of Golden Valley, and Renewal by Andersen.

If your garden is winding down and you're wondering what to do with it, the Master Gardeners are exactly the right people to ask. Bring them your end-of-season questions.

Start Your Sunday Right

Roll out your mat for a free yoga session with Hand Heart Yoga at 9:30 am. It's the best possible way to start a long-weekend morning, and it costs you nothing but showing up.

See who's here this week on our This Week's Vendors page, and we'll see you Sunday, September 6, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at 7800 Golden Valley Road — under the Water Tower. Enjoy the long weekend.
